UPDATE: March 27th LATV Forum Canceled — Developer Backs Out of Broadcast
The previously announced March 27th forum between the developers and the mayor — meant to be broadcast on LATV — has now been canceled. According to the mayor on his Facebook livestream this morning (3/25/25), Baystate Racing has decided to privately brief City Councilors before appearing again publicly.
On February 18th, the developers of the proposed “FairgroundsLeominster” project held a public meeting with nearby residents. What they heard was exactly what they didn’t want to: clear, vocal opposition from dozens of concerned residents who had done their homework.
Rather than engage with that criticism, Mayor Mazzarella took to Facebook to portray the meeting as “aggressive” and claimed it prevented supporters from speaking out. Now, instead of returning to the public square, the mayor and developers are retreating to a tightly controlled setting—a broadcast on Leominster Access Television (LATV), previously rescheduled but now slated for March 27th at 4pm.
They’re calling it an opportunity for the public to call in with questions. But make no mistake:
This isn’t open dialogue. It’s message control.
A Controlled Stage, Not a Community Forum
The LATV format allows for:
- Pre-set narratives
- Hand-picked questions
- Softball setups
- And a complete absence of real-time fact-checking
This is not a debate. It’s not transparency. It’s a PR play.
Let’s not forget: the developers have consistently offered vague promises, shifting renderings, and unsupported claims about jobs and economic benefits. Meanwhile, the mayor—who should be advocating for due diligence—has instead become their lead spokesperson.
Why? That’s a very important question worth asking!
Leominsterites: Here’s What You Can Do:
- Watch the broadcast. Don’t just hear what they say—watch what they avoid.
- Ask your questions anyway. Even if they’re screened, make your voice heard.
- Share this post. Let others know what this broadcast really is: a repackaging effort, not real engagement.
